Critical Incident Stress Management

Emergency response professions are stressful by nature. Especially stressful situations, called critical incidents, produce unusually strong reactions with the potential to interfere with one’s ability to function at the scene or later. The Region J Critical Incident Stress Management Team provides educational and psychological approaches designed to assist emergency workers in appropriately managing the effects of emergency response related stress.

The Region J Critical Incident Stress Management Team provides CISM services, at no cost, to Region J (Chatham, Durham, Johnston, Lee, Moore, Orange, and Wake Counties) emergency response personnel, including: ambulance and EMS services, rescue squads, fire departments, law enforcement agencies, 911 emergency dispatch centers, hospital emergency departments, school personnel and families of responders. When an emergency response situation has been identified as a critical incident, a request for CISM should be made as soon as possible.
